NVIDIA DLSS 5 Launches September 3, and PC Gamers Are Already Divided

NVIDIA’s biggest DLSS change yet arrives September 3, using generative neural rendering to reshape lighting and materials while keeping developers in control of where the AI touches the image.

NVIDIA is bringing DLSS 5 out of demonstrations and into a shipping game. The new 3D-Guided Neural Rendering technology launches September 3 at 9:00 p.m. Pacific in NBA 2K27 for GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs, with GeForce NOW Ultimate also supported.

This is a bigger change than another version of DLSS Super Resolution. Earlier DLSS features mainly reconstructed pixels, generated additional frames or cleaned up ray-traced lighting. DLSS 5 adds a generative neural-rendering stage near the end of the graphics pipeline that can create richer lighting and material responses using the game engine’s rendered frame as its foundation.

The distinction matters because NVIDIA is not describing a text-to-image model that freely invents a new scene every frame. The system takes engine data including the rendered color frame and motion information, then uses that foundation to add effects such as skin subsurface scattering, light transmission through hair and foliage, deeper contact shadows and more realistic material behavior while preserving the underlying geometry.

NVIDIA is also putting unusually granular controls in developers’ hands. Studios can choose between different neural models, tune structure and tone intensity, and use semantic or engine-level masks to decide which characters, objects or areas should receive stronger neural enhancement. That is NVIDIA’s answer to one of the biggest concerns around generative graphics: that an AI layer could override a game’s original art direction.

NBA 2K27 is the first real test. Visual Concepts is using DLSS 5 to change how arena lighting interacts with player skin, hair, jerseys and nearby surfaces while retaining the scanned facial geometry of real athletes. Players will need NVIDIA’s September 3 Game Ready Driver and can enable the feature through the game’s DLSS Neural Rendering setting.

The technology is still computationally expensive. NVIDIA says it has made the model roughly five times faster since its March reveal, moving from a dual-RTX 5090 demonstration to real-time operation on a single RTX 50 Series GPU. NVIDIA’s headline NBA 2K27 frame-rate numbers combine DLSS 5 with Super Resolution and Multi Frame Generation, so they should not be read as the raw cost of the neural-rendering stage by itself.

That performance question is one reason DLSS 5 has become so controversial before launch. Leaked builds have already been injected into games such as Cyberpunk 2077, GTA V, Skyrim and Control, producing everything from impressive lighting changes to distorted faces and aggressive stylistic shifts. Those experiments are useful for showing what the model can do, but they are not representative of a developer-tuned official integration.

The modding scene has even managed to make leaked DLSS 5 code run on some RTX 40 Series hardware. Official support at launch remains limited to RTX 50 Series GPUs and GeForce NOW, so those community ports should be treated as unofficial experiments rather than evidence that NVIDIA has expanded compatibility.

The September 3 rollout will therefore answer a much larger question than whether NBA 2K27 looks better. DLSS began as a way to trade AI reconstruction for performance; DLSS 5 is NVIDIA’s attempt to make AI part of the actual appearance of a rendered game. If developers can control it without losing artistic intent, neural rendering could become a major part of next-generation PC graphics. If players see it as an expensive filter that changes too much, adoption could be much harder.
