Rainbow Six Siege is having one of its busiest weeks in years. Operation Split Fire, the game’s Year 11 Season 3 update, launches September 1 after a reveal cycle that introduced a new Defender, a reworked slice of Villa, a new competitive playlist and a limited 3v3 mode. At the same time, Ubisoft used Gamescom to talk about the future of Siege and to expand Rainbow Six beyond the live game.

Why it mattersYear 11 Season 3 lands September 1 with a new shield-counter Defender, major Villa changes and a high-skill ranked playlist, while Ubisoft is already talking about Siege’s next era.

The headline addition is Noor, a new Egyptian Defender built specifically to make shield-led attacks more dangerous. His Horus Lance Launcher carries five projectiles that can pierce ballistic shields and destructible surfaces before igniting. Ubisoft says the charges can also be fired through floors and ceilings, or attached to devices such as Castle Armor Panels and Azami Kiba Barriers.

That makes Noor more than a direct Montagne counter. A shield player hit by the lance has to deal with the device before the flames become lethal, which can interrupt a coordinated push and create a window for defenders to retake space. His loadout includes the Commando 9 and ALDA 5.56 as primary options, with the 1911 TACOPS and Bailiff 410 as secondaries.

Villa is also getting the first of Ubisoft’s targeted map updates. Instead of rebuilding the entire map, the team has redesigned the basement and garage, moved the Living Room and Library bomb site downstairs, turned the garage into an interior space and adjusted surrounding routes for better flow and droning. Stadium Alpha, Stadium Bravo and House receive modernization work as well.

For ranked players, the biggest long-term experiment may be Legend Division. The SoloQ-only playlist is designed for top-level competitors and requires current Champion rank, at least Platinum in the previous season, a positive reputation standing and additional account security checks. Ubisoft says it will open mid-season, use regional leaderboards and reward top-100 players with a numbered charm tied to their final standing.

Operation Split Fire also brings a limited 3v3 Arcade version of Bomb and a broad balance pass. Dokkaebi’s Jegeo Payload now needs to maintain its connection to complete an upload, Kali receives handling and scope changes, and several weapons are being adjusted. The SMG-12 is one of the hardest-hit guns, with damage reduced from 28 to 16 and its magazine cut from 32 rounds to 22.

The season reveal is only part of the story. During Ubisoft’s August 30 Gamescom Community Checkpoint, the Siege team confirmed that it plans to return to four Operators per year starting in Year 12. That is a significant shift for a game whose recent seasonal cadence has often revolved around fewer brand-new Operators and more systemic updates.

Ubisoft also used Gamescom to reveal Rainbow Six Tactics, a separate single-player, turn-based tactical game set alongside the Siege narrative. The company says it is designed to bring Rainbow’s planning-heavy DNA into a different format, giving the franchise a second major lane while Siege continues as the competitive live game.

The community response around Split Fire has been especially focused on Noor’s anti-shield design, the Villa changes and the future Operator cadence. A dedicated reveal megathread on the Rainbow6 subreddit pulled together the trailers, test-server details and early reactions, while launch-day posts around the official Rainbow Six account have kept the season in active circulation. That social activity is useful as a measure of what players are watching, but the season details themselves come from Ubisoft’s official material.

Operation Split Fire arrives September 1 across Siege’s supported platforms. The immediate question is how Noor changes shield-heavy attack rounds. The bigger question is whether the new ranked structure, faster Operator cadence and the arrival of Rainbow Six Tactics mark the start of a much broader phase for a game that has already spent more than a decade reinventing itself.
