Lea Salonga has added a Hollywood Walk of Fame star to a career already filled with Broadway milestones. The singer and actor was honored in Los Angeles on September 4, becoming the first Filipina to receive a star on the famous sidewalk.

Why it mattersThe Broadway icon now has the 2,855th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame — and a first for Filipina performers.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce says Salonga received the Walk of Fame's 2,855th star in the Live Performance category. The ceremony took place outside the Pantages Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, a fitting location for a performer whose career has been tied so closely to the stage.

Ming-Na Wen joined the ceremony, connecting another piece of Salonga's history. Wen voiced Mulan in Disney's animated film, while Salonga provided the character's singing voice. Salonga also supplied the singing voice of Jasmine in Aladdin, giving her work a reach far beyond Broadway audiences.

Her stage career is just as important to the moment. Salonga became internationally known through Miss Saigon and later appeared in productions including Les Misérables. Across decades, she helped make a Filipino performer visible in spaces where that representation had been rare.

That is why the “first Filipina” part of the honor lands differently from another celebrity plaque. The star recognizes one performer, but it also marks how far a career that began in the Philippines travelled — from Manila stages to Broadway, Disney soundtracks and now Hollywood Boulevard.

Salonga's star is permanently placed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the Live Performance category.
