Disney is sending Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde back into another case. Zootopia 3 is officially in development, and the first story details point to a major change for the franchise: birds are coming to the city for the first time.
Disney says the new mystery involves a bird named Milton Corvus, giving Judy and Nick a problem that immediately pushes beyond the mammal-only world audiences have known so far. That single detail opens up a much bigger question about how Zootopia itself works when a completely new class of animals enters the picture.
Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman are set to return as Judy and Nick. Disney has also said Ke Huy Quan will return as Gary De'Snake, while additional new voices are joining the cast as the third movie takes shape.
The bird storyline gives the sequel a stronger hook than simply introducing another villain. The first Zootopia built its world around different mammal species living together, while the second film expanded that map. A third movie can now challenge the city from an angle the earlier stories never had to address.
That also fits the franchise at its best. Zootopia works when the police mystery is only one layer of the story and the larger world is being used to talk about assumptions, belonging and how different groups see one another. Birds give Disney a fresh way to revisit those ideas without repeating the exact same conflict.
Disney has confirmed the project and its early premise, but the company has not announced a theatrical release date in its current overview. More casting and production details are expected as Zootopia 3 moves further into development.
