A Las Vegas jury has found Duane “Keffe D” Davis guilty of first-degree murder in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur, delivering the first conviction in a case that has remained one of hip-hop’s most famous unsolved murders for nearly three decades.
The 12-person jury returned its verdict on August 31 after roughly three hours of deliberation. Reuters and the Associated Press both reported that Davis was convicted of murder with the use of a deadly weapon for orchestrating the drive-by shooting that fatally wounded Shakur on the Las Vegas Strip.
Prosecutors did not argue that Davis fired the shots. Their case was that he obtained the gun, helped organize the retaliation and was inside the white Cadillac used in the attack. The prosecution leaned heavily on Davis’s own past interviews, police statements and his 2019 memoir, where he had repeatedly described his role in the events surrounding the shooting.
The defense argued that those accounts were exaggerated or fictionalized and that the case lacked physical evidence tying Davis to the murder. The jury rejected that argument. Davis said in court that he intends to appeal.
Sentencing is scheduled for October 13. Reuters reported that Davis faces a possible life sentence without parole under Nevada law.
The verdict immediately became one of the biggest entertainment searches in the United States. Google Trends showed “tupac” at more than 200,000 searches in the past 24 hours, up more than 1,000 percent, with “keefe d,” “keffe d” and “who killed tupac” among the related queries driving the spike.
