Grand Theft Auto VI was not just one of Netflix’s biggest releases last week. It was the biggest. Netflix says Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look generated 31.1 million views in its first four days, putting Rockstar’s 27-minute game showcase ahead of every movie and TV title on the service for the week.
The result is especially striking because this was not a film, series or conventional streaming special. It was an extended preview of an upcoming video game, captured entirely from in-game PlayStation 5 footage and released first on Netflix before Rockstar opened it up to YouTube later the same day.
Netflix’s official Top 10 report says the GTA 6 presentation reached No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries it tracks globally. It also topped the English film chart with 31.1 million views, comfortably ahead of crime thriller The Whisper Man, which recorded 23.2 million views.
The numbers make Rockstar’s unusual Netflix-first strategy look far less risky in hindsight. Netflix had roughly six hours of exclusivity before the Extended Look appeared on Rockstar’s YouTube channel, yet that short window was enough to turn a game reveal into a global streaming event.
Comparisons with YouTube need some caution because the platforms count views differently. Netflix calculates views by dividing total hours watched by a title’s runtime, while YouTube uses its own view-counting methodology. The important signal is not a direct platform-versus-platform score; it is that millions of Netflix members treated a game showcase like appointment entertainment.
This also gives Netflix a new kind of programming opportunity. If a single GTA 6 reveal can outperform conventional movies and shows for a week, other publishers may see major gameplay reveals, documentaries and launch events as content that can live beyond Twitch and YouTube.
For Rockstar, the payoff goes beyond raw views. GTA 6 dominated entertainment conversation while reaching an audience that may not normally watch a gaming showcase. The Extended Look gave viewers the deepest look yet at Jason, Lucia and Vice City ahead of the game’s November 19 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The bigger takeaway is that GTA 6 is already behaving less like a normal game launch and more like a cross-media event. With 31.1 million Netflix views in four days and No. 1 rankings across most tracked markets, Rockstar just demonstrated how large that audience can be before the game is even released.
