Gears of War: E-Day has now had its first public campaign hands-on at gamescom 2026, giving players a much clearer look at how The Coalition is rebuilding the series around Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.

Why it mattersXbox’s gamescom 2026 hands-on shows Marcus and Dom at the start of Emergence Day, with heavier Locust encounters, destructible spaces and the classic cover-combat rhythm intact.

The campaign is set during Emergence Day, when the Locust erupt beneath Sera and attack the city of Kalona. Xbox’s hands-on describes a game that deliberately preserves the weight of classic Gears movement and cover while increasing the physicality of enemies and environments.

The Coalition is using modern technology to make Locust encounters feel less scripted and more destructive. The result shown in the preview is still recognizably Gears: close-range pressure, heavy weapons, roadie runs and aggressive use of cover rather than a wholesale genre reinvention.

E-Day is also a prequel built around the early relationship between Marcus and Dom, which gives the studio room to revisit familiar characters without simply continuing the timeline after Gears 5.

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC and cloud, with Game Pass Ultimate support and Xbox Play Anywhere. It is also coming to Steam.
