Peter Cullen, the voice actor whose deep, steady performance made Optimus Prime one of the most recognizable characters in modern pop culture, has died at 85. His agent, Kevin Motley, confirmed that Cullen died Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles.
For millions of Transformers fans, Cullen was more than the actor behind a familiar voice. He originated Optimus Prime in the 1984 animated series and returned to the character across television, games and the live-action films, carrying the same sense of calm authority through several generations of the franchise.
Hasbro marked his death with an unusually personal remembrance. The company said Cullen shaped how millions of people understood courage, sacrifice and leadership through Optimus Prime, and recalled the story behind the performance. Before his original audition, Cullen drew inspiration from his older brother Larry, a Marine veteran who had served in Vietnam.
That advice helped create the version of Optimus Prime audiences came to know: powerful without sounding boastful, commanding without losing warmth. Cullen later explained that he heard his brother in the character whenever he performed Prime. It became one of those rare voice performances that survived changes in animation style, casts, directors and even entire eras of the franchise.
His career reached far beyond Transformers. Cullen voiced Eeyore in numerous Winnie the Pooh projects, played the villainous KARR in Knight Rider and supplied the distinctive clicking sounds of the creature in Predator. His work stretched across six decades of television, film, animation and games.
The reaction from fans shows how far that work travelled. Transformers communities filled with tributes after the news broke, while a major Reddit post remembering the story behind the Optimus Prime voice drew thousands of votes. Another large discussion in the anime community focused on Cullen’s Toonami promo work and the role his voice played in introducing viewers to shows they would remember for years.
