Instagram’s AI creator label is changing to “AI-generated profile,” and the change now comes with a reach penalty. Profiles built around AI-generated people can lose recommendations in Reels and Explore if they do not disclose it.
The change replaces Instagram’s earlier “AI creator” wording. That old label could sound like it described a real person who happened to use generative tools. The new language is deliberately more direct: it is meant for profiles where the person being presented to viewers is generated or substantially created with AI.
The enforcement is the part that changes the stakes. Instagram says unlabeled synthetic-person profiles can be kept out of recommendations to non-followers, including discovery surfaces such as Reels and Explore. Creators who add the label themselves will not have their reach reduced simply because the profile features an AI-generated person.
This does not mean Instagram is suppressing every post made with AI. A photographer using AI editing, a creator polishing a caption, or a designer using generative tools does not automatically need the account-level label. The policy is aimed at identity, not every use of the technology.
The distinction matters because realistic AI influencers have become much harder to identify at a glance. Recent investigations have found synthetic personalities promoting dating apps, wellness products and other services while appearing to be ordinary human creators. Instagram says users have complained about discovering only later that a convincing profile was built around someone who was never real.
The response online has been broadly supportive of clearer disclosure, but it also exposes an enforcement problem Instagram still has to solve. Reddit users discussing the change quickly raised questions about monetization, detection mistakes and whether Meta should go further. Separate Instagram threads from recent weeks also show real users complaining that the older AI creator label was incorrectly attached to their accounts, which makes the appeal process especially important.
For AI influencer operators, the message is now simple: disclosure is no longer just a badge with little consequence. Instagram is attaching algorithmic distribution to whether a synthetic identity is labeled. For everyone else scrolling Reels and Explore, it is a small but meaningful attempt to answer a basic question that has become surprisingly difficult online: is the person on the screen actually a person?
